Louise Lewis Long-Time NWQ Member Passes Away Louise Lewis, a long-time member, died peacefully on November 22, 2003 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 86. A wonderful and enthusiastic member of Northwest Quilters, a truly nice person to all she met. A lady who couldn't pass up a good buy in fabric, "I'll take 6 yds., no make it 9. That will make a good back for a quilt". Those of us who knew her, saw her stash, which she shared with many of the local quilters. Louise shared her knowledge, laughter and joy of living with many of us at our meetings and friendship gatherings. Her annual trips to Sister Quilt week (14 years) were a HOOT!..Her car packed with items that anyone might need; material, thread, tables, iron & ironing board and those "HUGE LOUD FANS" to keep her Sister Campers cool; "Lucky Louise" as the Sister Campers called her, since she holds the record at the Sister's Show for winning NOT 1 but 2 of the raffle quilts. Louise started a quilt group in her home that grew and they moved to Fabric Depot for morning meetings on Wednesdays. Her comment to all was "Come quilt with me!" She also won many sets of block of the month squares from NWQ meetings. Her generosity will be remembered by all who knew her. If you missed her, you missed a gem of a gal. Louise leaves her three children: Steve, Marilee and Larry; also her sister "Liz" and 5 grand-children and 5 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Quilters. "Welcome to the Big Quilt Frame in the Sky Louise"!...save seats for your friends!!! ...Published in the January 2004 Patchword

Ila McCallum Ila McCallum is now offering three patterns in her series of Quilter Tested Patterns. The first is a beginning applique pattern called "Spring Breezes" which is easy but teaches inward and outward points, stems, circles and curves. The "Double Wedding Ring Table Runner" is an easy way to learn to do the Double Wedding Ring using paper piecing. The third is "Mountains in Autumn" which was at our quilt show in May. This landscape is based on an off-center Log Cabin block with a machine appliqued tree. All of her patterns have complete instructions with pictures and drawings to assist the quilter. E-mail Ila or phone her at 503-981-0494. Submitted by Ila McCallum

Bonnie Mitchell I am a designer this year for the 2004 Bernina Fashion Show. This is my second year. I'm almost finished... The show first opens in Houston in October of this year and then it will travel for a year. There will be a full color program they give you when you go to a show, and the program will also be for sale where magazines are sold. I got this year's program at Borders. It is an honor to be invited once but this second time is really exciting. Submitted by Bonnie Mitchell
Update Bonnie's original ensemble of coat and evening gown, "Worthy Inspiration" was given the coveted final spot in the Bernina Fashion Show in Houston and has also been used as the leading image in several publicity items about the show. The dress is a turn of the century style, light blue evening gown with train and black coat. The dress can be seen at the Bernina website under QuiltFest/Fashion show/Fantasy garments/page 6. Warren Whaley One of our members, Warren Whaley, passed away on January 18. Although Warren had lived in our area only since 1997 and was a member of Northwest Quilters for just a few years, he made a tremendous contribution to our organization. He was an innovative quilter and taught in several local quilt stores. Warren was especially generous in donating his long-arm machine quilting services for charity quilt tops given to Comforting Quilts. Along with several other local men who quilt, he was a featured quilter for the Vernonia quilt show "Real Men Do Quilt" in the late 1990's. Those of us fortunate enough to attend his memorial service were delighted to learn that Warren was formerly a professional dancer and a costume designer, as well as the former owner of a fabric shop in California. His art background, his color and design sense, and his love of travel were apparent in the many quilts he shared at Show & Tell. We will miss him and we extend our condolences to his daughter and his grandchildren. ....From the Patchword March 2003 Clark County Quilters - Obituary and photos of Warren's quilts. |
