A quilter for 28 years now, Suzette started embroidering at the age of 4,
learned to sew at 24, and fell in love with patchwork
and quilting in 1975. She has B.S. and Ed. M. Degrees in education from
Oregon State University, so teaching and public speaking are natural for
her. She's been creating crazy-patch for more than twenty years now and
taught at shops in the Portland area for 17 years, including several years
at Daisy Kingdom. She has created many "crazy" garments and small crazy
quilts, which will be on display at the Northwest Quilters' annual show,
along with her quilts of patchwork, both hand and machine-pieced. She has
had works shown in the Columbia Stitchers' Guild show and Northwest
Quilters' Annual Show in Portland and in the juried Labor Day show put on
by the Marin Needlearts Guild in the Bay Area. Suzette was a lecturer for
the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters show in Seattle, and this
last year donated a wallhanging to their travelling exhibit , "Telling
Secrets".
In addition to teaching crazy-patch, silk ribbon embroidery, hand-quilting
and hand-piecing at Mountain Country Mercantile in Bend, OR, she also
teaches beaded embroidery, "watercolor quilts", and dimensional
embellishments for quilters. She has taught crazy-patch workshops for
Quilters' Anonymous in Seattle and for the Marin Needlearts Guild in
California. In September of 2003 she will be teaching and lecturing at
Alston Hall College in Lancashire, England, and is booking now for 2004
teaching and lecture engagements. Suzette's collection of slides of
crazy-patch quilts and garments is very extensive, and she enjoys sharing
it and her collection of antique and contemporary crazy-patch quilts and
clothing with a receptive audience. Her background in education makes her
particularly adept at instruction, and her enthusiasm for crazy-patch and
its stitches is very contagious.
A good volunteer as well as a teacher, Suzette served on the board of
Northwest Quilters for 9 years, and in 1998 was their president. She
misses many of the NWQ members and is thrilled to be the "featured quilter"
for the 2003 show! After moving to Bend, Suzette has enjoyed joining the
Mt. Bachelor Quilt Guild and being involved in their group.
