Lecture and Trunk Show:
Thursday, April 11 at 1:00 pm -- "The Shape of Things to Come"

Workshop on Friday, April 12: "Interlocking Star Tessellation"
Workshop on Saturday, April 13: "Seven Sisters"

Every year we change up a few things at our Quilt Show, and this year is no exception. For the first time in a few years, we will have a guest lecturer at the Quilt Show and will also have two workshops taught there during the show itself.

In June 2011, Gyleen X. Fitzgerald gave a dynamic lecture at our evening meeting and taught two full-to-overflowing classes on her "Trash To Treasures Pineapple Quilts" method. She was so well received we received many requests to bring her back, and that's just what we are doing.

Gyleen is a working chemical engineer as well as author of 6 quilting and/or poetry books and many articles (in American Quilter Sept '09 and Jan/Feb '08; Quilter's Home Jan/Feb '09; and Quilting Quarterly Fall '10 and Summer '09, among others). Her quilts blend color, pattern and texture to provide a contemporary essence to traditional quilting. She shares her enthusiasm for quilting through interactive lectures and high energy workshops. Her written works center around Haiku poetry, quilt patterns, and children’s literature. In 2011, she also shared with us her innovative formula for using stash fabric in interesting but easy pieced backs, and many NWQ quilt backs reflect that. It was since published in the Bernina online magazine Through the Needle (Issue 7). Her patented "Butterfly Seam" method of sewing set-in seams was featured on Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson's The Quilt Show in 2012.

On the opening day of our show, Gyleen will give a presentation on "The Shape of Things To Come". Step outside the "square" to evaluate the mechanics of pyramid, diamond and hexagon quilts. The simplicity and elegance of the one patch. LECTURE CHARGE $5 (after admission to the quilt show).

Gyleen will also be teaching two workshops at the Quilt Show (Portland Expo Center) while she is here:

  • Interlocking Star Friday, April 12, 2013, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. -- Interlocking Star Tessellation: Geometric and fun using scrappy or planned fabric collections; great for hand-dyes and batiks. Learn the technique of using simple shapes to make an interlocking design. Easy to piece using Gyleen's map technique. Looks visually challenging but Gyleen makes it easy (well, easier ...).

  • Seven SistersSaturday, April 13, 2013, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. -- It Takes Seven Sisters: Nothing is more stunning than twenty brilliant stars made from diamonds. "Seven Sisters" block is what makes this quilt sparkle. The power in the sparkle is created by using 20 great fabrics from a narrow color palette. In this workshop you will learn the patented Butterfly Seam for perfect set-in piecing; take the fear and frustration out of this technique. Come ready to relax and chat; don't expect to finish this in class since there is no speed sewing. This beauty takes time to complete.

The fee is $50.00 per class for members ($60 for non-members), which INCLUDES SAME-DAY-ADMISSION to the Quilt Show.

If you are interested in attending EITHER CLASS (maximum 24 students per class), send your name, address, phone number, and email address along with a check for $25.00 deposit per class (make your check out to NWQ) to: Maureen Orr Eldred, 11500 NW Melody Lane, Portland OR 97229. Indicate which class you would like to take (prioritize if you'd like to take both). Balance will be due by March 15th.

Registration is open only to NWQ members until March 1, 2013; after that, non-members may register. The student list will be filled in the order registrations are received. Refunds (less a $10 cancellation fee) will be given for cancellations before April 1st or if your spot can be filled. Please contact Maureen Orr Eldred if you have questions moequilts2@comcast.net

Small-Quilt Raffle 2013

The 2013 NWQ Quilt Show will feature a Small-Quilts Raffle. We need donations of small-sized, well-made quilts in any color and any style. They don't have to be true miniatures -- though, of course, those are definitely welcomed -- but they should be well-proportioned for their size. This is our first time to do this and we haven't set many rules. Probably about 24" is the largest size, and much smaller is perfectly fine. Flexibility appears to be the byword.

This might be a good time to try out a new technique, a new-to-you color scheme or fabric (wool? silk?), or an intriguing design on a small scale. Finish it completely and donate it so attendees at our show can buy chances to win it. The money we raise will help offset the costs of the Quilt Show. Questions? Call Maureen Orr Eldred. moequilts2@comcast.net
