About this event

Joan Spencer is a quilt artist, educator, and a valued member of our guild. She served as Vice President and later President of the Northwest Quilters guild and is a member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA).

Joan earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University and spent her career as an elementary school teacher. Just before retirement, she joined a quilting group located near the school where she taught. There, Joan learned the fundamentals of traditional quilt block construction. As her skills developed, she discovered the creative possibilities of designing her own quilts—a turning point that transformed quilting from a craft into a true artistic passion.

Joan will discuss her approach to quilt making and design in her presentation:

"A Journey of Creativity and Design in Quilting."

Come with me back to my adventure that began in 2002 to deconstruct what makes up a quilt; such as top, batting, back, quilting with thread, reusing cloth and exploring ways to put fabric together into blocks.

I decided to use media other than fabrics to open my mind to new expressions of tops, batting, backs etc.  I played with pen and ink on paper, collage, and dryer sheets, to name a few.  These were not for others to see, just to have fun playing with ideas, however, I will share them with you.  As projects came up, I would use ideas from these creations to help design art quilts that showed some unique ways of working and designing.  Come back in time with me during our September meeting to see what wacky, fun things I did!
